The Lord with his descent into hell has annihilated the adversary and with his Ascension he has exalted man. The icon announces the victory over death, over hell and the finality of salvation: our humanity is definitively introduced into heavenly existence through the humanity of Christ. Jesus, having accomplished his mission, returns to the Father so that the Holy Spirit may descend upon us in person.
Christ, in a circle of cosmic spheres, from which his glory radiates, extends his right hand as a gesture of blessing and sending. On the left, Christ holds the scroll of Scripture containing the announcement of the Good News. The work of salvation is done. Now it must be freely accepted by every man. It is the sending to evangelize: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations by baptizing them…and behold, I am with you always to the end of the world” (Mt 28, 19-20). The joy of the apostles explodes, despite the farewell of Christ, because the promise remains.
The Virgin, image of the Church, is represented between two Angels below Christ who is her head. The end of the raised arms of the Angels and the feet of the Virgin form the three points of a triangle, a symbol of the Holy Trinity, of which the Church is the imprint.
